When Social Media Stops Being Social
I’ve often wondered whether Facebook limits the visibility of some of my posts and comments. Of course, it’s also possible that some people on my friends list simply aren’t interested in what I share. Either way, that’s okay. I suspect many users have had similar thoughts over the years.
One thing I do believe is that social media platforms should give users more control over what they see instead of relying on algorithms to decide what content deserves attention. Let people choose the posts they want to follow rather than having those decisions made for them.
I’ve also noticed that when I share topics that encourage discussion or point people to content outside of Facebook, those posts often receive very little engagement. Yet many of the people I interact with have told me they appreciate the information and viewpoints I share.
I don’t post simply to hear myself talk. I enjoy sharing articles, ideas, and information that may encourage people to think, learn something new, or view an issue from a different perspective. Whether you agree with my opinions or disagree with them, I believe respectful discussion and open debate are far more valuable than simply accepting whatever appears in our social media feeds.
If you’re looking for an alternative platform with a greater focus on open discussion, I invite you to join my Mastodon server at https://peoplegroup.social. Creating an account is free. Your email address is used only for account registration and administration, which helps keep the community free from spam and abuse.
Whether we agree on every topic or not, I welcome thoughtful conversations and respectful debate. If that sounds like something you’re interested in, I’d be glad to have you join the community.
